Discarded Christmas Trees used as Fish Structures

January 16, 2018

In late 2017, the parks department started an in-house project of adding fishing structures to Big Bear and Little Bear Lakes. They are using a combination of man-made material and organic materials like discarded Christmas trees. The Christmas trees are cabled to a cinder block to sink them to the bottom of the lake.  In addition to the artificial structures and small evergreen trees, they will also be adding pine tree logs that are anchored to the edge of the shores and project out into the lake, also being weighed down at the ends with cinder blocks. These logs will provide additional fish structure as well as provide places for reptiles to sun themselves and water birds to land.
