Red-winged Blackbird Notice
June 19, 2023
The red-winged blackbird breeding season is currently happening. While females sit on eggs in nests in our park trees, the males can become aggressive guarding the nest. Males have been known to sound their “conk-a-reee” alarm as a warning, flutter above people and animals, and then dive bomb people and animals that get too close. If you notice this behavior, simply move away and the Red-winged blackbird will cease it’s attack when you no longer are a threat to its nest. Red-winged blackbirds are protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act as they migrate north to south with grackles, cowbirds, and starlings to name a few.
